Brad Shirey has qualified for the Best of the Best a number of times on a number of horses — and he won it once on Pretty Boy Bullion, “Shrek.” He’s also won the Sweepstakes Finals, and he’s had plenty of great runs and great memories. But ask him what tops it and the answer isn’t about him: “Seeing my kids go on and be successful is better to me than anything.”
“A lot of people don’t realize how many other businesses and outlets we have going on,” he says. “Horses are the blessing in our lives that we have been able to turn into a great business as well. We just try and enjoy it all with family and the great horses we get to run.” His dad, Dan Shirey, is the man who made him the rider he is — “he would be proud of his grandkids today, that’s for sure.” And a mare named Roany, who lived to 34, was the hardest-headed, grittiest horse he ever owned.
Brad’s word for the weekend: “Just enjoy the ride and what’s important. There’s always another barrel race if this one didn’t go the way you planned.”
