Callie Baker & “Becky” — Finessin On Tha Fly

Callie Baker keeps it simple about her mare Becky — she loves how hard she tries every single run, and how consistent she is. That consistency has paid off: this past year Callie won the Derby in Texas at 4M Ranch aboard Becky.
Callie and her husband Simon run a training facility with around 40 head between training horses, prospects and broodmares. “We love being in the barn and working with young horses every day,” she says. “It’s exciting to watch them grow up here and hopefully become winners.” She’s also a returning qualifier — she came to BOTB before on Frostys Easy Jet Gal, “Ice,” the mare who gave her her first wins and taught her to be a better jockey.
The person behind it all? Her grandpa, Rodney VanGundy, who taught her how to break colts and handle horses the right way.
